Why should I worry about educating my children?

How do children learn?

Often we think of child education as preschool, elementary school, and on up the line. What is often forgotten is that the most effective way for a child to learn is to have fun doing it so that she will repeat the actions and remember them. She may not know what she's learning, but the interest helps her remember it and the repetition moved it from short term memory into long-term memory.

Some ways children learn are:

*Physical Activity - building, pushing/pulling, kicking, throwing, running, and jumping
*Mental Activity - puzzles, open-ended construction toys, arts and crafts
*Interaction With Others - learning about relationships using dolls, puppets, costumes, musical instruments
*Creativity - learning about self-expression with costumes & props, art & craft materials, play dishes & tools

Allow your child to have many open-ended, unstructured play experiences with a variety of toys and other materials.

Isn't it the school's job?

Why should I worry about educating my children? Isn't that the school's job?

Yes and no. Yes, our school system's job is to educate our children. However, as parents it is also our responsibility to provide our children with what they need-which includes an education.
While parents can enforce homework and other "school-based" learning, there is something even more important that parents can provide that the schools can't and that is values, ethics, and a sense of purpose. A strong bond between parent and teacher is necessary for a child to not only learn facts and figures, but also learn how to apply these to become a person of character and values.
